Goods that are not in the queue — orphaned items and excess stock
Scanning an EAN outside the queue is not a generic error. The system identifies why the item is at sorting and gives you the bulk location.
Scanning an EAN that is not in the queue does not end with a bare “not found”. The system first tries to identify why the item is at sorting.
First: excess stock already here. If this unit is at your sorting location and no order needs it anymore, the kiosk shows “Excess — no order needs this (N units). Leave here.” Leave it where it is; do not carry it elsewhere. It is on the Excess board in Move mode, and someone will take it from there to a shelf (The four fulfillment phases). Only if it is not this kind of excess does the detection below apply.
| Detection | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Orphaned product | The order was cancelled or deleted after the item had already been picked |
| Excess quantity | The order still exists, but its quantity was reduced after picking |
In both cases, the response includes a bulk location — where this item must be put away. The location comes from your queues: the system uses the location configured by the queue with the lowest number. This order is intentional, so two detections do not suggest different destinations for the same item.
Step by step: put away excess stock
- Scan the EAN of the unit in your hand. Instead of a sorting item, the kiosk shows a red Product outside queue card with its name and EAN, followed by “Put away at the bulk location — scan its code”.
- Read the code on the Bulk location tile in the bar at the top of the screen. This is where the unit must go.
- Carry the unit there and scan its code. The kiosk rejects any other code with “Scan bulk location: <code>” and does not send it to the server.
- Instead of scanning, you can hold the bulk-location tile for one second; its code is entered as if scanned.
- The kiosk responds PUT AWAY, with the location code and product name. The stock movement is recorded.
- One unit per scan. Repeat from step 1 for each additional unit.
- To stop, use Cancel at the bottom of the screen. The card closes and nothing is put away.
- If the card says “No bulk location configured”, there is nowhere to put the item. Cancel and tell your supervisor.
How to put it away
Scan the EAN, then the bulk-location code. Always one unit per scan: you are holding one loose unit, so a larger quantity would not match what is physically happening.
If no bulk location is configured for the excess item, the terminal sends no scan. Otherwise, any code could be sent to the server as a location code.
When the return is rejected
| Refusal | Meaning |
|---|---|
| The EAN matches more than one product | The system will not guess; someone must identify the correct product |
| The submitted location is not a bulk location for any of your queues | You scanned a different location |
| The product still has active picking, sorting, or packing items | This is not excess stock; the item is still needed |
| No location with tracked stock for this product was found | There is no stock to remove |
| You do not have warehouse access | The location is in a warehouse you cannot access |
The third case is the most common and the most confusing: the product is physically surplus here, but there is an open item for it somewhere in the company. Returning it as excess would erase somebody’s work.
