Company languages — three rules worth knowing
The first enabled language becomes the default. A new default replaces the previous one. You cannot remove the default until it is the only one left.
Company languages determine how many language versions you maintain for content such as product descriptions, document templates, and customer messages.
Step by step
- Go to Settings → Catalog → Languages and translations. This is your company's language list, even though it is under Catalog.
- Check the table: Language, Code, Native name, Default, Actions. The default language has a Default chip and a filled star.
- To enable a new language, click Add language, choose one under Select language, and click Add. The hint below the list says The first language is automatically set as default.
- To change the default, click the star in the chosen row — Set as default. This icon is hidden for the language that is already the default.
- To disable a language, click its trash icon and confirm with Delete in the Confirm deletion window.
- If a 2FA code window appears, enter the code; adding a language, changing the default, and deleting a language are sensitive operations (2FA confirmation when changing permissions).
- If deletion is refused, set another language as default first (step 4), then try again.
Three rules
- The first enabled language becomes the default automatically. You do not have to select it.
- Setting a new default removes that role from the previous one. There is always exactly one default language.
- You cannot delete the default while another language remains. Set a different language as default first.
The third rule can be confusing: a refusal does not mean the language is in use somewhere; it means that it is the default.
Who can change languages?
Read — every company member. Write — Settings permission plus 2FA confirmation (2FA confirmation when changing permissions).
Company languages and interface language
These are different things: company languages control the languages for your content; your interface language controls the language in which you see the system (Profile — details, photo, and interface language). Adding a company language does not change anyone's interface.
Catalog languages
Languages enabled for a company form the list to choose from for a catalog. Inside each catalog, you separately choose which of those languages it supports (Catalog languages).
The order is fixed: enable the language here first, then add it to the catalog.
