Carts, baskets, and worker locations
A cart is an ordinary location with the mobile flag. Its parent location tells you where it is — while the picker is given the address of its first stationary ancestor.
There is no separate “cart” model. A cart is an ordinary location with the mobile flag — Location types — six switches, not a closed list. Its parent location records where it currently stands.
Step by step
Take a cart at the terminal
There is no separate “cart” tile in the kiosk. Cart mode starts automatically when your queue uses this profile or when you are already holding a cart.
- Open WMS Terminal 2. Tap the mode name in the header — the Change function dialog with tiles opens. Select Picking.
- If the queue uses carts, the screen switches to Cart picking and shows the SCAN CART banner with the hint Scan a cart to begin.
- Scan the cart code.
- The banner changes to GO TO with a location code. Go there and scan the location — you will see CORRECT LOCATION and the list of products to pick below the banner.
- Scan the product EAN.
- Shelf cart: the banner says PUT ON SHELF and shows the shelf code, with the hint Scan the specified cart shelf (or Scan a cart shelf when any shelf will do). Scan the shelf.
- Single-compartment cart: the banner says CONFIRM QUANTITY and asks How many orders for this product? — enter the number and press Confirm.
- After each successful unit, the banner flashes PICKED with the product name. The counters at the bottom (Picked, Items, Shelves, or Orders) increase.
Scanning something that is not a cart gives This is not a cart. Other refusals on the first scan are collected in the table below.
Return the cart
- When nothing remains to pick, the banner says ALL PICKED and Return the cart or refresh; the screen says Everything picked — return the cart or refresh.
- The RETURN CART TO banner shows the station code; until you reach it, the hint says Go to the drop-off location.
- When you arrive, scan the location — the banner changes to Return the cart here.
- Press Return cart at the bottom of the screen; the number of orders on the cart appears beside it.
- Confirmation: CART RETURNED.
For a single-compartment cart taken at a station (for example, immediately after returning the previous one), the banner guides you to the next location while there are items on the route; it does not say Return the cart here. The Return cart button appears only when every order on the cart has been fully picked.
Refusals when returning the cart:
- The cart has orders with unpicked items — finish picking.
- Invalid cart drop-off location.
- The queue has no cart drop-off location configured.
- If the cart’s orders go to different stations: DIFFERENT DROP-OFF STATIONS and The cart carries orders for different stations — contact your supervisor.
If you do not want to finish the cart, use Release cart in the auxiliary actions row (beside Location contents). The banner confirms CART PUT AWAY.
Take over someone else’s cart
- Scan a cart held by another person.
- The Take over cart? dialog appears with The cart is held by {holder}. Take it to finish?
- Press Take over.
A cart already at packing asks a different question — Finish this cart?, The cart is at packing, but still has {units} units to pick. Take it and finish? — with an Take button. Without that prompt, trying to take such a cart gives Cart is waiting for packing — it cannot be taken.
Check where a container is standing
- In the kiosk, tap the mode name in the header and select Info panel in the Change function dialog.
- Scan the cart or basket code (banner: Scan a location or product).
- Read the status row under the header — active / inactive, mobile, and the zone code.
- Two badges say where the container is: at: {code} (parent location) and rack: {code} (the first stationary ancestor — this is the code shown to the picker). Both can be clicked to open that location.
- Below, Nested locations lists the containers on this cart and their status.
If the code does not belong to any location: Location not found.
If you scan a product (EAN or SKU), the Info panel shows locations containing that product. A pallet or carton standing at a rack has the rack code in large letters in its row — that is where you go. Below it is the small note container: PAL0241 — the code you scan. Click the row to open that container.
If a container is not standing at a rack, the row shows its own code and a at: … note: a carton on a pallet shows the pallet code there, while a pallet standing by itself shows at: —.
You can type an SKU using the keyboard. Letter case, spaces, and leading zeros do not matter: 5420 finds a product with SKU 05420. If that shortcut matches several products, the Info panel asks you to scan an EAN.
After scanning a product, the terminal only says how many units there are and at how many locations — without the product name, for example 100 at 3 locations. The list on screen shows where to go.
The address shown to the picker
A cart may be in a basket, the basket on a pallet, and the pallet beside a rack. You cannot “walk to” any of those containers — you walk to the rack.
That is why the system always follows parent locations up to the first stationary ancestor and shows its code as the destination. The chain can be at most 10 levels deep.
Worker location
WORKER_<id> is a virtual cart for a specific person, created automatically the first time it is needed. It is a system location, mobile, and assigned to the user.
Goods remain there between picking and put-away. This location is shared by all terminal modes, so replenishment refuses to start when you are carrying goods from another process: Cart is not empty.
Without an active warehouse, the worker location cannot be created: No active warehouse for user.
Two cart types
- Shelf cart — has active shelves (type
CART_SHELF). Scan sequence: cart → EAN → shelf. - Single-compartment cart — no shelves. Shorter sequence: cart → EAN → quantity.
The type is not a database field. The system calculates it from whether the cart has active shelves.
Cart shelves are identified by the pair: cart + shelf code, never by the shelf’s own warehouse — carts move, so their stored warehouse can become outdated.
One cart = one reserved queue. The cart’s subtype (Small / Medium / Large / Basket) narrows which queues it matches.
Common cart refusals
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
| This is not a cart | The scanned code does not have the mobile flag |
| You already have a cart | You must put the current one away |
| Someone else is holding the cart | It is held by another worker |
| Cart at packing | It is waiting to be packed |
| Picking unfinished | It cannot be put away halfway through |
| No matching free queues | All are in use |
| Cart subtype mismatch | The queue requires another size |
| Cart is full | Capacity limit reached |
A cart shelf cannot be moved during picking: … is a cart shelf — location cannot be changed.
Container movement history
Every move of a basket creates a record: from where, to where, who moved it, when, and which queue items it carried at the time. The first move has no “from” field — that is when the container entered circulation.
Sorting and location types
Rules that most often surprise terminal users:
- Single-line orders are sorted into baskets (mobile locations).
- Multi-line orders are sorted onto shelves.
- A cart shelf is never a sorting destination.
- A basket standing in the packing zone cannot accept new items.
