A cart reserves a queue — one cart, one queue
Scanning a cart removes the queue from everyone else. Nothing releases it automatically — there is no time limit.
In Pick from Cart mode, the rule is one cart = one queue. Scanning an empty cart from the public pool reserves exactly one queue — and that queue immediately disappears from the list for every other operator.
Step by step: take a cart and release the queue
- Tap the mode name in the kiosk’s top bar and choose Picking in the Change function dialog. If your queues use carts or you already have a cart, the kiosk switches to the Cart picking screen automatically.
- The banner says SCAN CART (“Scan a cart to begin”). Scan the code on an empty cart — that one scan reserves a queue and takes it away from the rest of the warehouse.
- If someone else has the cart, the kiosk asks Take over cart? (“The cart is being used by {user name}. Take it to finish?”). Take over takes it immediately — the previous operator loses the cart without warning. Cancel leaves it with them.
- If the cart is at packing but still has unpicked items, the prompt says Finish this cart? (“The cart is at packing, but still has {n} units to pick. Take it and finish?”). Confirm with Take.
- Read scan refusals literally: CART IN USE, ALL QUEUES IN USE, NO WORK FOR CART, “Cart is waiting for packing — it cannot be taken,” “Cart does not match your queues — required subtype: …,” “You already have a cart. Put it away first.”
- Pick the items. The queue is yours as long as you hold the cart — nothing releases it automatically.
- Normal completion: at the drop-off location, press Return cart (n orders). The RETURN CART TO banner with a location code tells you where to go.
- Emergency exit: Release cart — the red item in the toolbar below the screen content. It works in every state, including when there are items on the cart. The kiosk responds CART PUT AWAY; the queue returns to the pool and unpicked units remain to be picked.
Which queue it will select
The order is fixed: highest priority, then oldest. There is one exception — if the cart is already carrying something, its own queue comes before all others.
Priority has five levels, and the queue can inherit it from its orders — Queue priority — where it comes from and how it affects cart assignment.
Only queues with open work count: a unit to pick that has an assigned location and is not already on another cart. A unit with no location is not open work — there is nowhere to go to pick it.
Messages shown when scanning a cart
- “ALL QUEUES IN USE” — work exists, but other people currently hold all matching queues. Wait or take a different type of cart.
- “NO WORK FOR CART” — a matching queue exists, but it has no open work.
- cart held by someone else — you can take it over by confirming. The previous operator loses the cart immediately and without warning.
- cart waiting for packing — it cannot be taken.
- cart with unfinished picking — the kiosk shows the total number of missing units and lets you resume.
- cart subtype mismatch — the message tells you which subtype is required.
A reservation does not expire
Know this before your first shift: no mechanism releases a reserved queue automatically. There is no time limit and no overnight cleanup task. An operator who takes a cart and goes home holds that queue until something is done.
It can be released only by:
- dropping the cart — normal completion,
- putting away the cart (“release cart”) — works in every state, including with items on the cart; unpicked units remain to be picked and the queue returns to the pool,
- takeover by another operator,
- forced release by a manager — an administrative cart action that requires a reason.
Manual assignments (a manager assigned an employee to the queue) are not reservations and are never released by these actions.
Putting the cart away is not completion
Putting the cart away does not check whether picking is complete and does not prepare anything for packing. If an operator puts the cart away halfway through, the orders remain at the same point in the process — just without a cart or an operator.
