Price groups in a catalog
Assigning a price group is more than a switch; it generates prices for the entire catalog in the background.
Adding a price group to a catalog looks like selecting a field, but does something much bigger: it starts creating a price row for every product in that catalog.
Step by step
- Go to Catalog → Catalogs, select a catalog, and open the Price groups tab.
- Choose a group in Add price group…. The list shows its name and currency.
- The first group you add becomes the default automatically. To make another group the default, click the star and Set as default in its row; the previous group is no longer the default.
- Set the order (priority) by dragging its handle or using the ↑ ↓ arrows.
- Click Save. Nothing is sent to the server before this.
- Do not repeat the operation. Prices for the new group are created in the background, so products have no prices for a while. Wait, then refresh the product list.
Disconnect a group using the trash icon in its row and click Save. The default group’s trash icon cannot be used; set a different group as default first.
Two default groups at once
Older data may leave a catalog with two default price groups. The orange banner below the header says More than one default price group, the tab has a !, and a warning above the list names the groups. Click the orange Default badge on the group that should remain default and click Save; the others lose their default designation.
Why it runs in the background
A catalog can contain tens of thousands of products. Creating that many rows during form submission would freeze the browser for minutes, so the operation starts after you confirm the change and runs outside the request.
Practical consequence: immediately after saving, products may not yet have prices in the new group. This is normal—do not repeat the assignment; wait and refresh the list.
Prices are created with a base value of zero. Groups based on a formula or workflow are recalculated as soon as they are created.
Backfill happens once
The system records when this initial fill is completed. Assignments that have never completed are detected and retried by a job that runs every hour (up to 200 assignments per run).
An important limitation: only assignments whose fill never succeeded are retried. A price group intentionally assigned to only part of a catalog will not be “fixed” to cover everything.
One assignment per pair
The same price group can be assigned to a catalog only once. Simultaneously trying to add it twice produces a clear message, not a system error.
A catalog can have many price groups, but exactly one is marked as the default; designating a new one clears the previous designation.
