Attribute groups
A hierarchy that organizes attributes — and a category-based visibility rule that may surprise you.
Groups organize attributes on the product card. They form a hierarchy with no depth limit: a group can have a parent group, which can have its own parent, and so on. The system prevents circular references.
A group code must be unique within a company.
What the screen looks like
Go to Catalog → Attributes, on the Attributes and groups tab. Groups and attributes appear together in a tree on the left; the editor for whichever one you click appears on the right.
- Tree. Expand a group to see its attributes and subgroups (use the arrow beside the name). At the bottom is the Ungrouped bucket for attributes without an assigned group. The number on the right is the group's attribute count, using the same status filter as the switch.
- Status. The Active / Inactive / All switch filters attributes. Groups are always visible; an inactive group is grayed out.
- Search and filters. Enter a search or set a filter and the tree becomes a paginated flat list of results. Groups that match the search appear above attributes. Clear the search and filters to return to the tree.
- Drag and drop. Drag an attribute onto a group (or onto Ungrouped) to move it there immediately. A message appears at the bottom with an Undo button that returns the attribute to its previous group. Dragging a group onto another group at the same level moves it before that group, changing the group order.
- Plus beside a group. Hover over a group to reveal a + button that creates a new attribute directly in that group.
- Editor. In the heading, edit the group name, see its code, and use the Active switch. The ⋮ menu has Add subgroup and Delete. Below the heading, a sentence summarizes the group, for example, The Appearance group contains 13 attributes and is visible in MOODO for all categories. Click an underlined bold part to open the tab where it is configured. An orange part indicates a problem (for example, the group is not assigned to any catalog).
A direct link to a group looks like ?group=<id> — the Group link in an attribute editor heading opens it this way. Old links in the form ?tab=groups&group=<id> still work.
Editor tabs
- Attributes — attributes in this group. The Add attribute to group… field searches all attributes and shows which group each one currently belongs to. An attribute can belong to only one group; adding it here removes it from its previous group. ✕ removes an attribute from this group (it remains ungrouped). These changes are saved immediately, without a Save button. Click an attribute name to open it on the Attributes tab. Use the ⋮⋮ handle at the start of a row to reorder attributes (drag it or use ↑↓ on the keyboard); this is the global order and saves immediately. If a catalog has a custom order for attributes in this group, a note above the list explains that its order takes precedence in that catalog. Set order opens the order window for that catalog; Restore global order removes the custom numbers for this group after confirmation. Reordering is disabled for a group with more than 100 attributes.
- Catalogs — catalogs where the group is active: Position (Auto = the position in Advanced settings,
#N= a number set for the catalog), Visible / Hidden, and Active / Inactive. Add a catalog with the+ NAMEbutton. Click Auto or#Nto open that catalog's Attribute order window with the group selected; there you can drag groups and attributes, then click Save order. For a catalog you just added, click Save first. - Categories — narrow visibility to specific categories (see below). Each category has a With subcategories / Without subcategories switch.
- Translations — the name and description in every company language. The first row uses the same language as the name in the heading. Translate missing (AI) suggests a name and description for languages without a name. Choose which suggestions to use, then click Save to keep them.
- Advanced — Code, Parent group, Position (lower numbers come first), Icon.
The Save button at the bottom of the editor saves everything except changes on the Attributes tab.
Step by step: create a group
- Click + above the tree and choose Add group. To create a subgroup, choose Add subgroup from the ⋮ menu in the parent group's heading.
- The editor opens on Advanced. Enter the Code, the only required field. It accepts letters, digits,
_, and-. - Enter a name in the heading or on the Translations tab.
- On Catalogs, add the catalogs where the group should be used. Without this, it will not appear on any product; the sentence below the heading will say it is visible in no catalogs.
- Click Save; you will see “Saved.”
- On Attributes, add attributes to the group — only after the first save.
Deleting a group does not delete its attributes
Delete in the editor heading's ⋮ menu removes the group and its subgroups. Attributes that belonged to a deleted group remain; they simply lose their group assignment. No product data is removed.
Visibility depends on categories
You can assign a group to categories. There is a rule here that is easy to miss:
- A group with no assigned categories is visible for all products in its catalogs.
- Once you assign even one category, the group becomes visible only for products in that category (including its subcategories by default).
So the first category assignment does not “add visibility” — it narrows it.
Assign a catalog before assigning a category
Only categories from catalogs already assigned to the group are available. Without any catalogs, the Categories tab says: First assign the group to catalogs, then you can narrow it to categories. The order is fixed: catalog → category.
Group name
A group without a name displays its code everywhere. The editor heading warns “missing name — showing code.” Set a name and description in the heading or on the Translations tab.
